Three years ago the biannual style magazine set out to investigate the ins and outs of men’s wardrobe habits through an online series of interviews named Questionnaire. First question: What garment is key to your personal style? From there, a riveting series of insightful testimonials, often hilarious and highly revealing, unfolded. Clothing proves the perfect starting point for fascinating discussions not just on style, but also on character, upbringing, society, memory and everything else. Fifty of these Questionnaires now appear in this handsome printed compendium with interviewees including architect John Pawson, artist Grayson Perry, singer Devendra Banhart, grime MC Novelist, milliner Stephen Jones and writer Will Self. Also included are three special and sprawling bonus interviews, live from the dressing rooms of designers Stefano Pilati, Charles Jeffrey and Paul Smith. Apparently nothing, apparently everything. Many of us grew up in a world where nothing was gay only to discover that, soon after, some people think that everything has become too gay. Thus, the drawings of Pepo Moreno, acrylic on paper that represent with tremulous lines and saturated colors food, celebrities, plants, drugs, animals, saints, politicians, feelings, dictators and entities, all of them with wild eyes and smiles frozen in the time, they function as a celebration, parody and reclamation of the gay agenda that corrupts the world. The gay agenda is gay. If everything is gay, nothing is. Gay existence itself, like the technique of these illustrations, is not learned. He is dissident, amoral and free. Gay, like this book, is full of strange icons, heartbreak, errors, anarchy, fetishes, feather, masculinity, onanism, unhealthy desire, self-hatred, love and garbage. All of this is also gay and is drawn with a childlike and childish line because immaturity is gay and all children, in reality, are gay. Consuming culture captured in a physical object in the year 2022 is gay, paying for a book to see things that are freely available on Instagram is gay. But from now on money is gay. By using traditional techniques, the artist navigates through various modes of communication, which at first seem innocent but on closer inspection reveal an array of gay and queer symbolism. Through archival research he has found ways of broadening sociopolitical perspectives on national and sexual identity by offering alternatives to recontextualize the past. Flow of Patterns is Samma’s first monograph and presents works from the past twenty years—from his graduation work on swimming pools to his recent exhibition, Iron Men, which scrutinized masculinity as a form of national representation. The publication is edited by Krist Gruijthuijsen with in-depth essays by Linda Kaljundi, Jeppe Ugelvig, and Léon Kruijswijk. Jaanus Samma is a visual artist based in Tallinn, Estonia. Samma’s critical exploration of queer desire, public space, and cultural tradition spans photography, installation, sculpture, and video. Samma’s current fields of interest encompass history, ethnography, and museology as well as the intersecting narratives they entail. His work aims to locate queer subjectivity and desire in seemingly hetero-normative spaces. Combining fieldwork, oral history, and archival research, the artist responds to absences of sexual representation by way of storytelling or semantic subversion, as he recovers loaded symbols and signs or inserts them in spaces where they seemingly do not belong.

312 pages
2024
285mm × 210mm
Hardcover
Published by Lugemik.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1705/1039/files/98AE36ED-C03C-4A2A-B23F-130A47DAA32F_1_105_c.jpg?v=1743793350
c-ndy-transversal-15
C☆NDY TRANSVERSAL 15

C☆NDY Transversal is an annual limited-edition magazine about Arts, Fashion and Style dedicated to celebrate the transversal world. This issue also celebrates the 80th anniversary since the iconic trans pioneer superstar Candy Darling was born. C☆NDY is a publication respected and appraised in the fashion and transversal communities while still being a niche publication with strong visuals and evolving graphics, daring casting and diverse content. All created on December 9, 1989, weeks before his untimely death from AIDS, this series celebrates Haring’s constant evolution as an artist and career-long determination to push the boundaries of his practice up until his passing. Through the artist’s uncanny ability to constantly reinvent himself and bring forth complex narratives to life through his singular approach to artmaking, this late series is a revelatory body of work that highlights Haring’s strength and inquisitive nature as an artist, which continues to influence contemporary artists working today.

This group of 17 drawings made with gouache and black ink on Japanese paper presents an indecipherable, layered narrative created with both familiar and less prominent characters and symbols from the artist’s oeuvre. Birds peck at nude bodies and orifices, black hearts and amorphous blobs float in space and are stabbed by knives and beaks, and log-like elements grow from the earth or are violently split apart. There is struggle, there is acceptance, and life continues to evolve and repeat itself over space and time. Without any specific information left behind by the artist about the meaning behind these compositions, the viewer is left to examine each work to posit what these vignettes might be saying without a set framework. While there is a variety of familiar figures present in these works, there are some new protagonists, like birds covered in wispy feather-like markings. Each element is approached with a remarkable technical maturity and clarity that signifies both a beginning and an end for Haring: his ongoing boundary-pushing exploration of his practice and a reckoning with his own mortality and the work he will eventually leave behind.

Beyond the subject matter depicted, materiality also plays a significant role in these drawings. From the earliest moments in his career, Haring worked with and painted on unconventional and found materials, like bedheads, doors, tarps, and subway platforms. Acutely aware of how his paint, gouache, ink, and chalk would look and feel on any given surface, Haring’s technique was influenced by what he had access to. Towards the end of his life, Haring was able to afford a different set of materials to work with, including shaped canvases, expensive inks, and specialty paper. Fokas’s work always focuses on the human form, and in Boys With Feelings specifically on the nude male body. The balletic, sometimes acrobatic, twisted and intertwined bodies of his subjects interact with each other, with themselves and with the viewer in a singular expressive manner. These are not just the usual nude photos.

The models remain faceless, save for the inclusion of a few solitary eyes gazing directly at the camera. Their bodies transformed into landscapes — into abstracted mases. Arms become legs, torsos merge into themselves, hands grasp mounds of flesh, desexualizing what could otherwise be considered simply erotic images.

How many bodies are in this photo? Where does the one model end and where does the other begin? In a world sadly accustomed to more and more alienation and isolation, Fokas’s images celebrate the pure joy and beauty of human connection and touch. His playful yet formal approach allows the viewer to share in the intimacy of every moment he captures without the constraints of patriarchal shame and digital detachment. Fokas aims his lens at the body as a site of desire, fantasy, submission and memory.

In his own words: “This project emerged from loneliness, but within that solitude I began to hear myself more clearly. It marks my journey into adulthood — perhaps a bit late, but nevertheless deeply felt.”

Kostis Fokas (Athens, 1979), is a conceptual photographer whose practice centers on the exploration and the complexities of the human body. Fokas’s work has been exhibited in the US and Europe including at the Louvre Museum, Colette, Art Basel Miami, the Benaki Museum, and MOMus Museum of Modern Art Thessaloniki, among others. Issue 2 is dedicated to water — moving through fluidity as material, condition and metaphor. Featuring conversations, essays and visual works by a range of international voices, the issue attends to what slips, leaks and resists containment — tracing shifting relations between bodies, ecologies and language. Ecce Homo, behold the man—without his social attributes, often nude, in splendid isolation. Hall seeks the common denominator—metonymically called the Naked Chair—of mere existence in the images of others’ (mostly male) bodies. He regards things, objects, gardens and landscapes with the same searching gaze. His minutely arranged still lifes—a glass, a flower, a chair – call to mind Bonnard and Matisse. Hall’s bare chairs are recurrent silent echoes of isolation and transience, intensified by the dark shadow the AIDS epidemic cast on his life and work while living in New York. Although his works are not referential in the traditional sense, Hall reacts to the works of other artists, including painter Alice Neel’s psychological realism and the work of photographers like David Armstrong and Peter Hujar. Hall was friends with Hujar and moved in the same scene—until the latter’s early death from AIDS. Photography plays a key part in Hall’s work — though never as an end in itself: it helps him compose his pictures. He selects details—a foot or a hand, for example—and transposes them into painterly renditions, wholly reinventing the subject portrayed in the process. The resulting works, characterized above all by their radical intimacy, tell of isolation and a deep-seated need for connection.

360 pages
2025
295mm × 220mm
Hardcover

Edition Patrick Frey

Introducing the first edition of The Pegasus Diaries!
