Details

Austrian Gustav Klimt is known for his sensuous, golden prtraits of women, and of course for his most reproduced painting, The Kiss. In Galison's Klimt Mother and Child keepsake box of cards, details of four Klimt paintings are reproduced on four cards each. The subjects of the paintings range from Expectation (c. 1905-09, Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna) to The Kiss (1907-08, Oesterreichische Galerie Belvedere, Vienna) and Fulfillment (c.1905-09, Austrian Museum of Applied Arts), to the final tender depiction of a sleeping mother and small child, a detail from The Three Ages of Women, (1905, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Rome). The sturdy decorative box holds cards and envelopes neatly, and when the cards have been sent, it's great for storing all sorts of little things—from extra buttons to pearls.

Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt is best known for his opulently gilded art nouveau portraits of women that epitomize fin-de-siècle Vienna. His Symbolist pastiches of pale nudes, allegorical gardens and erotic content served as the basis for many American psychedelic poster designs in the 1960s. Early in his career, Klimt was supported generously by the Viennese community, and received several commissions for murals in theaters and the Museum Kunsthistorisches. Early narrative paintings depicted heavy subjects such as anxiety, doubt, sexuality, and death, but in later years, he turned toward landscape painting, exploring light and abstract patterns of nature.
