About Barkley L. Hendricks
Barkley L. Hendricks (1945–2017) was an American painter from Philadelphia, celebrated for his life-size portraits of Black Americans. Painting stylish, self-possessed subjects against flat, bold backgrounds, he was a pioneer of contemporary Black portraiture. His 2008 retrospective, Birth of the Cool, travelled to institutions including the Studio Museum in Harlem.
