Scream is the horror franchise that began with Wes Craven's 1996 film, written by Kevin Williamson. Following Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, and a masked killer known as Ghostface, it reinvented the slasher genre with sharp, self-aware humour about horror movie rules. The film's success revived the genre and launched a long-running series of sequels.
