Throughout his career, Calder illustrated many of his mobiles, stabiles, and standing mobiles for exhibition catalogues published in the United States and abroad. These sketches express the dynamic nature of his output in two dimensions and offer valuable insight into a sculpture’s composition and orientation. The cover of this notebook features a drawing made in 1949 for Buchholz Gallery/Curt Valentin, New York.

About Alexander Calder

Alexander Calder (1898–1976) was an American sculptor celebrated as the inventor of the mobile. Trained as an engineer, he combined playful wit with mechanical ingenuity, creating hanging abstract sculptures of balanced, brightly coloured forms that move with the air, as well as monumental stationary works known as stabiles that stand in public spaces around the world.
