DAVID ZIMMERMAN: BARESTATE

Artist Statement Sept 27 2025

Just this morning, two days before the show, I was confronted with my concept turning around and slapping me hard in the face.  Someone very close to me was sent the invite to this event by mistake. It is not someone I would expect to want to attend. In fact, the response confirmed that. It was a plea for morality and presumably to not do the show.

This confrontation forced a decision, do I believe in the idea of joyous and uncensored sexuality, or do I succumb to fear and shame. I chose to stand my ground. While overt sexuality does not have a place everywhere, it does have a place in art and in the queer community.

When something as fundamental as the desire for sex is threatened or condemned for any group of people, the very concept and expression of sexuality becomes a rallying cry—a protest to make room for freedom.

Is morality defined by what is displayed? Or is it defined by intention? By intention and behaviors? I believe all aspects of life are beautiful and capturing such raw passion as we find here in Barestate can help others know it’s possible. And that it’s good.

The show is really about the idea of domesticating sexuality. Our sexuality is so often kept in a locked box, said to not be appropriate or even allowed. I hope this work presents sexuality in a more beautiful way and leaves room for the disrobing of shame while encouraging exploration and enlightenment. It is a celebration of the very essence of what it is to be human.
