FROM THE AUTHOR:

The book And the Band Was Playing a Gay Tune is very personal to me, and in some ways, has been in the works for over four decades. In the early 1970’s my friends used to call me on Sundays and asked me to come over with my camera and photograph them dressing up, dressing down and just capture their lives and newfound acceptance into society. I didn’t know it then, but I was documenting a group of friends celebrating being who they were, being gay, embracing life and all the joy that comes from listening to a happy tune!

Sam Shahid has been shaping the image and impact of advertising for over 30 years. First making an indelible mark as Vice President and Creative Director for CRK Advertising and Calvin Klein in the 1980s, Shahid’s résumé continues to expand its influence.

Established in 1993, the clientele for his eponymous Shahid & Company, Inc. has encompassed the worlds of fashion, publishing, sports, luxury and beauty, and their roster has included Abercrombie & Fitch, Versace, Valentino, Perry Ellis, Dolce & Gabbana, Interview and Musée magazines, Banana Republic, Asprey and many more.

Mr. Shahid has also served as Art Director for over one hundred books, including Kelly Klein’s Pools and Photographs, Bruce Weber’s Branded Youth and O Rio de Janeiro, Ellen Von Unwerth’s Snaps, Herb Ritt’s Africa, Jessica Lange’s 50 Photographs, Marc Hom’s Portraits, Jeremy Kost's Fractured, Jim French's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor, Steven Haas's George Platt Lynes: The Male Nudes, and Joel Grey’s Looking Hard and The Billboard Papers.
