This 100% viscose cabana shirt features Calder's wire portrait Kiki de Montparnasse II embroidered onto the back panel, with Calder's signature embroidered on the sleeve. Alexander Calder's sculptures are intended to be viewed from different angles- so Rome Pays Off choose to implement this element through slightly offset embroidery in two colors.

In the 1920s Calder developed a new method of sculpting: by bending and twisting wire, he essentially “drew” three-dimensional figures in space. In these unprecedented massless sculptures, Calder carved expressive lines out of voids. Kiki de Montparnasse II is one of three portraits in wire that Calder made of the avant-garde muse who posed for many of the best-known artists of her day, including Picabia and Man Ray. Calder’s first portrait of Kiki was executed in his Paris studio in May 1929—an improvisatory event filmed by Pathé Cinema for Montparnasse–Where the Muses Hold Sway. His last and final one was the severely abstract Féminité (c. 1930), in which the line essentially became the subject.

About Alexander Calder

Alexander Calder (1898–1976) was an American sculptor celebrated as the inventor of the mobile. Trained as an engineer, he combined playful wit with mechanical ingenuity, creating hanging abstract sculptures of balanced, brightly coloured forms that move with the air, as well as monumental stationary works known as stabiles that stand in public spaces around the world.
