Although celebrated for his work in three dimensions, Calder was also a prodigious painter. In 1953 he spent a year in Aix-en-Provence, where he set up a makeshift space for paintings on paper. As Calder recalled, “I would moisten the paper with a flow of water and wait till it dried a bit but not too much; then I would draw on it with a brush full of China ink—this would develop clouds and trees and fungi and things of that nature.” Calder also made high-contrast, monochromatic illustrations in ink with crosshatched stripes.

About Alexander Calder

Alexander Calder (1898–1976) was an American sculptor celebrated as the inventor of the mobile. Trained as an engineer, he combined playful wit with mechanical ingenuity, creating hanging abstract sculptures of balanced, brightly coloured forms that move with the air, as well as monumental stationary works known as stabiles that stand in public spaces around the world.
