Janis Joplin (1943–1970) was one of the most electrifying voices in rock. Born in Port Arthur, Texas, she rose to fame in San Francisco with Big Brother and the Holding Company and became a defining figure of the late-1960s counterculture. Her raw, blues-soaked performances of songs such as Piece of My Heart and Me and Bobby McGee remain legendary.
