Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen)
Tom of Finland (1920–1991), born Touko Laaksonen, was a Finnish artist whose homoerotic illustrations redefined the visual language of gay masculinity. Celebrated for his hypermasculine figures—leather-clad men, sailors, and bikers—his work combines technical precision with unapologetic eroticism and a spirit of empowerment. Emerging in the mid-20th century, Tom of Finland challenged censorship and cultural norms, creating imagery that inspired confidence, visibility, and pride in queer identity. His legacy continues to influence contemporary art, fashion, and LGBTQ+ culture worldwide.
