Details

Oil on Canvas
100 x 48 inches
One in a series on 12 large oil paintings. This was a dream. All the images were related to the Tarot cards. It may have been a rodeo but when the massacre took place in Beijing, China, I was profoundly impacted by the demonstrations and repression. I have always had empathy for the underdog, maybe because I grew up in such a strict environment, everything was not allowed. So I moved to New York then LA and DID everything! And I'm still standing. I've lost many people I loved, especially my gay guys - they were the best friends ever. Irreplaceable. And I'm still creating in multiple mediums. It's the best therapy on earth. And I attempt every day to be the greatest expression of me. And shine a light in this crazy world.

BJ BIGWOOD

I received a full 3-year scholarship to the School of the Worcester Art Museum when I was 17. It was very prestigious at the time, but I ended up moving to New York City. Massachusetts was boring. I studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology and almost signed a contract with Zoli Modeling Agency but decided art was the life I wanted. I had a one person show at the Angus J. Bruce Gallery in Soho, attended by Ahmet Ertegun and Sam Speigel. And I met Henry Geldzahler who was no longer mayor but the head of Cultural Commissions. I gifted him a pastel portrait from an interview with Diana Vreeland in Interview Magazine. Then I moved to Los Angels. Met Wolfgang Puck and did a portrait of him like Jesus at the last supper but the backdrop was the Spago pizza ovens, and a crazy celebrity filled crowd up front. It hung in the original restaurant for 18 years. I've shown in 100s of galleries, been collector by everyone, married twice. Had 2 fabulous Afghan/ Belgian sheepdogs - Bentley and Zabu. Survived heart break and cancer and still believe that love is the most important thing.
