MARIA GORODECKAYA , Fiction
Details
London-based Russian artist Maria Gorodeckaya presents an artists zine that weaved diaristic poetry with a selection of photographs made - and taken - of boys, over the course of the last two years.
Gorodeckaya's work sits at the crossroads of writing, performance and sculpture as an investigation into the power dynamics within which identities are determined through both affective and affected bodies.
Before practicing as an artist, Maria worked in the media in Moscow, where she became acutely aware that women are not socially trained to objectify men. What happens when the gaze is reversed? The visual languages for objectify men have often been developed by gay photographers and filmmakers. Treating herself as a subject of culture, Gorodeckaya uses Fiction to investigate the differences, if any, between these existing languages and her own formed gaze.
